The town’s floral displays for 2014 have been judged by the Committee of Dartmouth Green Partnerships. Some winners are old favourites, others newcomers, showing how important plant displays are to the town. Displays are judged for their innovation and originality, use of colour, condition and maintenance, sustainability and recycling, choice of plants and design and use of materials.
Foss Street was the Best Locality, with individual shops gaining several awards. The Canvas Factory was the best All year Round Display and won the Shops and Businesses category. The Kitchen Shop came second and Baxters and Coombe Gallery were both Highly Commended. Foss Street is a wonderful place, with plant displays full of colour and variety, some of them highly original. Animals in Distress won an award for Best Newcomer.
The Windjammer was Best Pub, Best Club was the Anzac Club and Best Hotel Dart Marina. The Best B&B was Valley House and Best Café was the market’s Dart to Mouth deli. The Floating Bridge won Best Overall Display for the ‘wow’ factor of its scarlet begonias which fill all the many window boxes and containers. The town’s pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants word hard to create attractive displays which all helps Dartmouth look its best.
The awards are not confined to commercial premises. Residents create some amazing gardens, often in tiny spaces, such as 5 Island House off Bayard’s Cove which won Best Front Garden (Town). At the other end of Bayard’s Cove the magnificent hanging baskets outside number 11 won it the Best Container (Town) award.
Individual gardens along Coombe Terrace and Coombe Road overlooking Coronation Park scored highly in several categories, and the area was runner up as Best Locality. The gardens form a ribbon of colourful and varied displays in front of the houses.
The more hidden gardens had their own award, with 55 South Ford Road winning Best Hidden Gem – a garden on a steeply sloping site threaded through with paths and planting. Best Sheltered Housing was King’s Quay.
Townstal had its own successes with 111 Britannia Avenue winning Best Front Garden (Townstal) and 76 Britannia Avenue Best Container (Townstal).
